Yesterday I suggested calendar-charting your child’s days – the good, bad, and ugly. Here is another idea that I found about charting.
In a forum for parents with special need kids, a mom wrote that she uses ABC’s to help figure out how to avoid her son’s behavior issues the next time. As an educator myself, I was familiar with this concept but had to be reminded of its usefulness in my personal life.
One website explains it this way:
An ABC Chart is a direct observation tool that can be used to collect information about the events that are occurring within a student’s environment. “A” refers to the antecedent, or the event or activity that immediately precedes a problem behavior. The “B” refers to observed behavior, and “C” refers to the consequence, or the event that immediately follows a response.
This mom charted her sons behavior for a couple of weeks and saw a direct link. Through this, they were able to work on the particular behavior pattern.
Happy charting!!! Oh the things we do to help our precious little ones.
